Mr. Gbadegesin highlighted the importance of maintaining stringent compliance measures to protect public health and prevent future health crises. He emphasized the necessity for these markets to adhere to specific conditions to ensure the well-being of both traders and residents.

In his statement, Mr. Gbadegesin stated, “Following extensive renovations and compliance measures, including the implementation of stringent conditions and a written mandatory undertaking for reopening, Ladipo Market, Oyingbo Market, Alamutu Ologede Market, and Ile-Epo Oke Odo Market have been reopened today for business transactions.”

One of the key conditions that the reopened markets had to fulfill was the establishment of designated waste disposal areas. Mr. Gbadegesin stressed the serious health risks associated with unsanitary markets, including diseases such as cholera, typhoid, Lassa fever, Ebola, malaria, and others. He expressed LAWMA’s commitment to preventing such health hazards in Lagos State.

Furthermore, Mr. Gbadegesin warned that future violations of the stipulated conditions would result in more severe penalties, including the permanent closure of the non-compliant markets. He also indicated that local government authorities would closely monitor the operations of these markets to ensure ongoing compliance.

Mr. Gbadegesin urged the public to report any observed violations of the conditions to LAWMA, emphasizing the organization’s zero-tolerance policy for reckless waste disposal within markets. He made it clear that any markets found in breach of the rules would face fines and potential closure. This proactive approach by LAWMA aims to create a healthier and more hygienic environment for Lagos residents.
