Former Tottenham Hotspur manager, Tim Sherwood, has expressed his criticism of Manchester United defender, Raphael Varane.

In a scathing assessment, Sherwood questioned Varane’s impact since joining Manchester United in 2021 from Real Madrid on a four-year contract. He also raised concerns about the Red Devils’ performance under their current manager, Erik ten Hag.

Sherwood stated, “Essentially, what they are doing under Ten Hag is buying a host of superstars and hoping they perform. They lack a clear playing style. I don’t see any patterns or structure. What I see is sending a group of players onto the pitch, seeing how they perform, and hoping that one of the superstars can rescue them from difficulties, and that’s precisely what has happened.”

He further pointed out, “Casemiro…in my view, Varane has managed to escape scrutiny; he has not made a significant impact since joining the club. We talk about players like (Bukayo) Saka needing rest due to consecutive games, but this boy (Varane) is in and out, dealing with injuries frequently. I don’t see the durability there. What has he contributed to Manchester United? I think there are too many players like him.”

Sherwood continued, “But we readily criticize Harry Maguire. We can have a go at him, but he will go out there, give his all, and face it head-on.”

Raphael Varane has appeared in 70 matches for Manchester United in various competitions. He was widely recognized as one of the world’s top center-backs during his decade-long tenure at Real Madrid, where he won 18 major trophies, including three La Liga titles and four UEFA Champions League titles.

However, Varane has been sidelined for 39 games over the last two seasons due to injuries, including a recent absence in Manchester United’s 2-1 league victory against Brentford due to a minor issue.
