The Kaduna State Schools Quality Assurance Authority (KSSQAA) has taken action to seal Al-Azhar Academy in Zaria, following reports of a student’s tragic de@th allegedly due to severe beatings and corporal punishments administered by some teachers. The 19-year-old JSS 3 student, Marwan Sambo, had reportedly faced this ab¥se over absenteeism.

Dr. Usman Abubakar, the Director-General of KSSQAA, stated that a fact-finding mission was launched by the state’s Ministry of Education and the school itself, representing the state government. The purpose of their visit to Zaria was to gather information about the events surrounding the incident, from the Al-Azhar Academy, where it occurred, to the victim’s home, to offer condolences, and to engage with the bereaved family and some of the victim’s schoolmates.
During their investigation, the KSSQAA team also visited the Divisional Police Headquarters in Zaria City, where the school principal and vice-principal were being held. Subsequently, they visited Hajiya Gambo Sawaba General Hospital in Zaria, where the victim’s de@th was formally confirmed.
Dr. Abubakar further stated that the Kaduna State Government, under the leadership of Governor Uba Sani, is committed to ensuring a conducive learning environment, equity, and justice. He urged the public to remain calm and law-abiding while the investigation continues in pursuit of justice.

As a provisional measure, following the provisions of its Establishment Act (amended 2015), the KSSQAA has temporarily closed down Al-Azhar Academy in Zaria, with the school’s premises remaining sealed until the investigation concludes.
