In a match where Erling Haaland netted twice and Phil Foden added another for Manchester City, Wenger noted that Manchester United’s struggles in building up play from the back had a significant impact on their performance.
Wenger observed a disconnection between Manchester United’s attacking and defensive players, which allowed Manchester City to exploit space during the game.
Speaking on beIN Sports, the Frenchman expressed his sympathy for Manchester United, emphasizing that they seemed to lack hope during the clash.

“The gap between the two teams increased as the game progressed,” Wenger stated on beIN Sports. “In the end, you felt sorry for Manchester United because there appeared to be no hope in the team.
“I struggle to see where they can improve, basically. This team has lost confidence, quality, and even spirit today. Additionally, I didn’t witness a great fighting spirit from Manchester United.
“I believe that Manchester United’s primary issue lies in the quality, the individual quality of the players. Today, they were very poor at constructing play from the back. They often passed the ball back to the goalkeeper when they had opportunities to play forward. I would say that’s where the issues began.”
He continued, “This approach makes the entire team uncertain and lacking in confidence because when they sense fear from behind, they become hesitant to receive the ball.
“I would say the second part of their major issue today was the significant gap between the forwards and defenders.”
