Attack on Soldier sparks fear among Osun residents

Fear has gripped residents of Iree town in Boripe Local Government Area of Osun State after an attack on a Nigerian Army soldier in the town, raising concerns about potential reprisal attacks.

The incident occurred on Tuesday when some hoodlums assaulted and wounded a soldier at the Poly Junction area of Iree. The identity of the soldier and the cause of the altercation leading to the attack remain unclear.

Onlookers refrained from intervening, fearing they might become targets of the hoodlums. One of the witnesses, a trader at Poly Junction, mentioned that the hoodlums were led by a notorious thug in the town known as “Gbedu.”

The wounded soldier was later taken away by other military personnel who arrived at the scene. In the aftermath of the incident, many residents, including students of the polytechnic, chose to stay indoors, and shops remained closed due to concerns about potential reprisal attacks by the military.

The spokesperson of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Osun, Kehinde Adeleke, confirmed the incident but stated that the reason behind the attack was still unclear. The incident underscores the tensions and security concerns in the area, and residents are anxious about the potential aftermath.
