The Federal Government has unveiled plans to kickstart the reconstruction of the collapsed bridge at New Artisan along the Enugu Port Harcourt dual carriageway. The initial phase involves palliative measures on one lane of the standing bridge, with a commitment to make it operational within the next 10 days.

Governor of Enugu State, Barr Peter Mbah, and the Minister of Works, Engr. Dave Umahi, revealed this development during their joint inspection visit to the site on Wednesday.

Governor Mbah expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Minister for their swift response in alleviating the challenges faced by road users due to the collapsed bridge. He announced, “There is going to be the repair of the existing lane, and hopefully, within the next 10 days, our people should be able to use one of the lanes. Then effectively around the middle of next month, the full work on the bridges on both lanes would commence.”

Minister Umahi commended Governor Mbah’s effective leadership, describing him as a focused and productive leader who applied pressure to ensure the immediate addressal of the challenge. He stated, “This week, we are going to do palliative work on this existing or standing bridge. We will also start the reconstruction of the collapsed bridge courtesy of Mr. President.”

Umahi further acknowledged President Buhari’s release of funds through the 2023 Supplementary Appropriation Act for the reconstruction of the two bridges at the collapsed site and another bridge at the Pipeline Products Marketing Company (PPMC) depot at Emene. He highlighted the collaborative efforts between the federal and state governments in the infrastructure projects.

The Minister praised Governor Mbah for prioritizing service to the people over partisan politics, emphasizing the importance of leadership commitment to the citizens. He assured that within the next 10 days, the standing bridge on one lane would be reinforced, making it operational for use.
