Sanwo-Olu urges religious leaders to promote tolerance and perseverance

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has called upon religious leaders to advocate for tolerance, perseverance, and unwavering trust in God amid challenging times. Represented by the Commissioner for Home Affairs, Mr Olanrewaju Kayode, the governor made this plea during the 2023 International Day for Tolerance event held in Ikeja, Lagos.

The theme of the event, “The Role of Religion in Engendering a Positive Mental State in the Face of Current Economic Realities,” underscores the importance of religious guidance during times of economic uncertainty.

Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized the need for religious leaders to convey messages of tolerance, endurance, and complete trust in God. He stated, “As the Holy Book says, ‘And this too shall pass.’ We hereby seek your continued partnership, cooperation, and endurance in this regard.”

Given Lagos State’s status as a melting point for diverse nationalities and religions, the governor stressed the necessity of promoting tolerance and mutual respect for opinions and differences among residents.

Addressing the economic challenges globally, Governor Sanwo-Olu acknowledged the palpable economic pulse in Lagos State. He highlighted the role of religion in providing a guiding force for maintaining a positive mental state in the face of economic challenges. He emphasized faith and mindset as beacons of hope and resilience for individuals and communities.

Acknowledging the impact of the current economic realities, the governor pointed out the disparities in people’s lifestyles, worldviews, and global economies. He noted the challenges faced by businesses and organizations, with some merging or winding up. In response, his administration has implemented measures to assist small and medium-scale enterprises with soft loans and grants.

Governor Sanwo-Olu underscored the government’s commitment to the economic prosperity of the people, with efforts to create an economic hub for businesses. He commended the resilience of Lagos residents and the communal spirit that fosters solidarity during challenging times.

The governor praised the tolerance demonstrated by Lagosians, highlighting the government’s compassionate drive to distribute food relief materials to residents, irrespective of tribe, tongue, or religious inclinations. He urged residents to continue supporting and understanding the government’s efforts, emphasizing the importance of mutual respect for diverse opinions, culture, and religion.
