The first incident occurred on August 19, 2023, when eight corps members en route to the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Orientation Camp in Sokoto were abducted in Zamfara State. Despite assurances from NYSC management, only one person has been rescued, leaving the fate of the others uncertain.

The parents of the victims, frustrated by the government’s perceived abandonment and negligence, claimed to have sold their properties to raise N13 million for ransom. However, kidnappers collected the ransom and continued to demand an additional N100 million.

In early November 2023, another 11 corps members were abducted while boarding the AKTC to the NYSC Orientation camp in Kogi State. Although it is unclear whether the 11 have been rescued, some captives were reportedly released through the efforts of their families who paid significant sums.

Expressing their dismay, a parent of one of the abducted corps members highlighted the traumatic experience and criticized the government’s lack of concern. He emphasized the need for swift action and intervention in such situations.

The National Association of Akwa Ibom State Students, University of Uyo, issued a statement urging the Federal Government, Akwa Ibom State government, security agencies, National Assembly, and NYSC directors to address the ongoing challenge. The student association called for strategic mechanisms to rescue their colleagues and enhance security on routes connecting states.

In response to the incidents, fresh graduates awaiting NYSC mobilization expressed apprehension, with some praying not to be posted to the North due to security concerns. They emphasized the need for urgent government intervention and a lasting solution to ensure the safety of corps members traveling between states.
