Minister Adelabu outlines strategic regional approach to energy harnessing

The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has revealed the federal government’s strategic approach to harnessing region-specific energy resources in its intervention in the power sector. Addressing the annual Power Correspondents Association of Nigeria (PCAN) seminar, the minister highlighted plans to leverage the unique energy potentials of each region.

Adelabu emphasized that the government’s strategy involves focusing on solar energy in the North, implementing mini hydro power plants in the Middle Belt and the Southwest, and adopting a hybrid approach with solar. Coastal states, on the other hand, will be identified for wind energy utilization.

Acknowledging PCAN as a crucial stakeholder and partner in the power sector, the minister called on the media to actively advocate against power theft and vandalism. He stressed the importance of educating consumers to prevent acts of sabotage.

Adelabu underscored the significance of customers paying for electricity consumed in determining the financial liquidity of the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI). He expressed confidence that, with the liberalization of the sector, Nigerians will soon witness improvements in power supply, aligning with the objectives outlined in the 2023 Electricity Act.

The minister highlighted that the 2023 Electricity Act plays a pivotal role in the country’s energy roadmap, signaling the current administration’s commitment to transforming the power sector. This commitment, he noted, is in line with President’s agenda as outlined in the Renewed Hope Agenda. The minister’s statement reflects a strategic and regionally tailored approach to address energy challenges and enhance power supply across the nation.
