In a recent development, the University of Calabar (UNICAL) has officially announced a substantial increase in tuition fees for undergraduate students, surpassing the 100% mark. The disclosure was made through a statement provided to the press in Calabar on Monday by the institution’s spokesperson, Mr. Effiong Eyo. The decision to revise the fees upwards was reportedly reached during an emergency meeting of the university’s Senate held last Friday.

According to the released statement, the revised fees will be applicable to both the 2022/2023 and 2023/2024 academic sessions. Notably, the increment will impact freshers, returning students, and final-year students in non-science courses, who are now expected to pay N111,000, N91,500, and N114,000, respectively. Additionally, third-party dues of N36,500, N21,500, and N21,500 are also to be paid by these categories of students.
For science courses, the new fees stand at N155,000, N125,000, and N148,000 for freshers, returning students, and final-year students. The third-party dues for this category amount to N38,500, N21,500, and N21,500, respectively.
Prior to this adjustment, the tuition fees for an average student, depending on the department, were N64,050 for freshers, N52,050 for final-year students, and N49,500 for returning students.

The university’s management justified the fee hike by citing current economic challenges and the imperative to uphold the institution’s renowned academic standards.
