Gundogan’s departure could haunt Man City in EPL title race

Former Arsenal star Paul Merson has raised concerns over Manchester City’s decision to let midfielder Ilkay Gundogan depart on a free transfer to Barcelona during the summer, suggesting it might prove to be a crucial mistake in the current Premier League title race.

Merson, a football pundit, emphasized Gundogan’s significance to Man City, citing his pivotal role in securing the Premier League title for the club in the past. He expressed his belief that Gundogan’s absence could have consequences for City’s championship aspirations this season.

Speaking to Sportskeeda, Merson remarked, “Let’s be honest – Ilkay Gundogan has been a massive miss so far. He’s scored so many important goals for City, and they would not have won the league without him. I thought it was phenomenal for them to let him leave on a free transfer, and it might come back to bite them.”

Gundogan, who was Pep Guardiola’s inaugural signing for Manchester City in 2016, captained the team to a treble victory last season. The German midfielder contributed significantly, amassing 100 goal contributions in 304 appearances for City. The decision to release him from Etihad raised eyebrows among fans and pundits alike.
