The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) is urging Mele Kolo Kyari, the Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), to disclose the daily production and export figures of oil in Nigeria within seven working days. SERAP alleges that the NNPCL has not provided information on the barrels of oil produced and exported by the country.

In a letter signed by SERAP Deputy Director Kolawole Oluwadare, the organization emphasizes the public’s legitimate interest in having access to this information. The letter also requests details on the revenue generated from oil and how much has been remitted to the public treasury since the removal of the petrol subsidy.

The organization asserts that transparency in these matters is crucial for the public interest, arguing that opacity could negatively impact the fundamental interests of citizens. SERAP cites Section 1(1) of the Freedom of Information (FoI) Act 2011, which entitles them to request and access information, including details about Nigeria’s daily oil production and exports.

If the NNPCL fails to respond within seven days, SERAP indicates its readiness to take appropriate legal action to compel compliance in the public interest. The call for transparency comes in the wake of allegations by the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, who claimed that the NNPCL is not remitting sufficient foreign exchange into the treasury despite the removal of the fuel subsidy.

SERAP stresses that the NNPCL has a legal responsibility to uphold transparency and accountability regarding Nigeria’s daily oil production and exports.
