Dr. Aminu Maida pledges transparent telecom regulation for industry excellence

In a recent visit to the Hon. Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, the Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Dr. Aminu Maida, emphasized his commitment to transparency as the cornerstone of his leadership in telecom regulation.

Maida highlighted the importance of transparency in building a resilient, accountable, and efficient institution, stating, “It is by transparency that we can self-regulate even as regulators. And by so doing, we would be putting ourselves on our toes, which in the long run will drive the Commission forward to achieve our goals of operational excellence.”

Commending the minister for his transparent leadership style, Maida acknowledged its potential to transform the industry into one that is accountable to both the people and industry players. Expressing gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for entrusting him with the responsibility of leading a critical sector of the economy, Maida shared his vision and priorities for the Commission.

During the discussion, the NCC boss underscored the prioritization of Quality of Experience (QoE) within the industry, emphasizing that compliance in this regard would be non-negotiable. He also identified broadband connectivity as a key priority, considering it the biggest enabler of the digital economy and financial inclusion, aligning with the Ministry’s 5-pillar agenda.

Addressing the minister, Maida outlined ongoing efforts to review internal processes at the Commission for increased efficiency and responsiveness. He emphasized the digitization of operations, aiming to improve regulatory activities and attract more investors into Nigeria’s telecommunications industry.

Reflecting on his visit to the Digital Bridge Institute in Lagos, Maida highlighted the institution’s vast potential in driving a knowledge-based economy, aligning with the “Knowledge Pillar” of the Strategic Plan unveiled by the minister. He expressed intentions to prioritize the revamp, retooling, and redirection of the Institute to extract its optimum value in line with the Commission’s objectives.

In response, Dr. Tijani acknowledged the pivotal role of the NCC in achieving the nation’s digital aspirations, expressing respect for the agency’s work. Assuring the NCC CEO of collaboration, the minister stated, “I want to assure you that you have the best partner in me. We will work together to achieve the goals and vision we have set.” This exchange signals a collaborative effort towards achieving excellence in the telecommunications industry.
