The Institute of Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR) and the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) are jointly urging governmental and traditional entities to prioritize the participation of women in conflict resolution and peace management committees. Emphasizing that the involvement of women accelerates results and ensures sustainability in the peace-building process, the organizations are calling for a shift in the patriarchal nature of traditional societies.

Dr. Joseph Ochogwu, the Director General of IPCR, conveyed this message during a community dialogue/training workshop in Akwa Ibom on “Strengthening the Role of Women in Conflict Prevention and Peace Negotiations in Traditional Societies in Southern Nigeria.” Ochogwu, represented by Grace Awodu, the head of the Gender Peace and Security unit, stressed the need for traditional institutions to recognize the significance of including women in these committees.

He stated, “In Conflict Resolution Committees, women should be included so that the necessities and needs of women would be captured. We want to mainstream women in peace-building; when women are involved in the peace-building process, peace tends to last longer than when they are not involved.”

Diallo Abdourahamane, head of the UNESCO Abuja office, echoed this sentiment, urging stakeholders to eliminate barriers and stereotypes hindering women from actively participating in conflict prevention and peace-building processes. Recognizing women as both victims of conflict and agents of change, Abdourahamane emphasized their indispensable contribution to decision-making processes at all levels.
