Buhari Affirms Commitment to Transparency and Accountability in Book Launch Remarks

Former President Muhammadu Buhari asserted yesterday that his administration maintained meticulous records of its tenure, anticipating the need to be accountable for the trust bestowed upon him. Buhari made these remarks at the book launch that documented his achievements during the eight years of his presidency.

The two books, “Working with Buhari: Reflections of a Special Adviser Media and Publicity (2015–2023),” authored by Femi Adesina, and “Muhammadu Buhari: The Nigerian Legacy (2015–2023),” a compilation edited by Dr. Udu Yakubu, aim to chronicle the accomplishments of Buhari’s presidency.

During his visit to the nation’s capital for the first time since leaving office in May 2023, Buhari emphasized the transparency of his administration. He stated, “Without documentation, revisionism wins. Human beings often have short memories, and unless events are recorded in cold print, some people would come and attempt to either distort or even obliterate recent history.”

Acknowledging the authors’ efforts to document his administration’s achievements, Buhari highlighted their importance in preserving an accurate historical record. He underscored the transparency and accountability of his government, noting that they were aware that posterity would ultimately judge them.

The former president expressed gratitude to those who worked tirelessly to ensure the recording of this history for current and future generations. He emphasized that government is a continuum and likened it to a relay race, where each administration passes the baton to the next.

Offering his support to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, Buhari expressed confidence in achieving the dream of a country where the population experiences emancipation. He acknowledged that hard decisions would be necessary in the journey toward the desired destination, and sacrifices would be made, seeking the understanding and support of the people for the nation’s ultimate good and goal.

Buhari cautioned against revisionism, stating, “Let revisionists not rejoice that they have the ultimate say in the bid to distort history. Facts and records will ultimately prove them wrong.” He took solace in the existence of records that would remain inviolable against deliberate falsehood and distortion of facts pertaining to his tenure in office.
