Senate President Godswill Akpabio arrived in Luanda, Angola on Sunday to lead Nigeria’s delegation at the 147th Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly. He was received at Luanda International Airport by the Nigerian Ambassador to Angola, Professor Monique Oshame Ekpong, and high-ranking officials from the Angolan government, led by Joao Diogo Gaspar, Deputy Secretary UIP Angola.

Gaspar expressed his honor at the presence of the Nigerian Senate President and believed that Akpabio’s participation in the IPU Assembly would enhance not only Nigeria’s relations with Angola but also foster better relationships among African countries, facilitating consensus on issues affecting the continent.

Akpabio expressed his delight at attending the IPU Assembly hosted by Angola and commended the Angolan Government for their strong bilateral relations with Nigeria. He emphasized the importance of Nigeria’s delegation in strengthening bilateral parliamentary relationships for the benefit of both nations.

Upon arrival, Senator Akpabio led Nigeria’s delegation to the first meeting of The African Group at the IPU Assembly.

The 147th IPU Assembly, hosted by the National Assembly of Angola, is taking place from October 21 to 27, 2023. The event offers a platform for parliamentarians, partner organizations, and experts to exchange best practices and commit to the overall theme of “Parliamentary action for peace, justice, and strong institutions.” This theme aligns closely with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 16, emphasizing the importance of peace, justice, and strong institutions as enablers of the development agenda.
