Ministry of transportation affirms unwavering commitment to combat corruption among staff

Magdalene Ajani, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transportation, has reiterated the ministry’s unwavering commitment to eradicating corruption among its staff.

Mrs. Ajani made this statement during the opening of a two-day sensitization and enlightenment workshop organized by the Anti-Corruption and Transparency Unit (ACTU) within the ministry. The theme of the workshop is “Uprooting Corruption and Promoting Honesty and Integrity.”

She emphasized that maintaining a zero-tolerance policy for corrupt practices would enhance the effectiveness and integrity of the ministry’s workforce. According to Mrs. Ajani, it is time to reposition the ministry for improved performance by eliminating corruption and promoting ethical conduct.

The workshop is a continuous effort that has been held since 2021, serving as a reminder to deter unethical practices in service delivery. The ministry aims to encourage employees to provide services ethically, demonstrating professionalism, integrity, honesty, and transparency. Five core values have been outlined to guide staff: accountability, meritocracy, professionalism, loyalty, and ethical practice.

Mrs. Ajani, who also served as the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, emphasized the importance of efficient service delivery in her new role. She stressed that staff must maintain ethical practices, professionalism, and ensure efficient output to the public. Unethical practices such as arriving late to work and using office materials for personal use were highlighted as areas of concern.

The Permanent Secretary explained that the ministry operates entirely online to facilitate work both inside and outside the office. Digitization processes have been implemented to enhance service delivery, allowing staff to work from anywhere in the world. The adoption of digital solutions has made work easier, more efficient, and adaptable to different work environments, fostering effectiveness.

Vivian Nwosu, Director of Special Duties at the Federal Ministry of Transport, appealed to the federal government to fulfill its promises of increasing staff salaries. She stressed that salary increases are essential for staff to cope with the current economic situation in the country.
