Ijaw group issues warning against impeachment of Rivers Governor, Fubara

The Ijaw Nation Development Group (INDG), a pan-Ijaw organization, has issued a stern warning to political actors involved in the alleged impeachment efforts against Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara. The group cautions that such a plot could instigate a crisis, jeopardize security, and hinder development in the state.

This warning follows a reported arson attack and destruction of public assets at the Rivers State House of Assembly complex.

The INDG expresses concern not only for the peace and security of the state, given the attack on Sunday night but also about Fubara, who has been in office for just five months, becoming the target of a political coup.

Prof. Prosper Ayawei, the President of the INDG, speaking on behalf of the group, calls on stakeholders, including Nyesom Wike, the minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), to exercise restraint and resolve existing disagreements without plunging the state into chaos.

Ayawei states, “Rivers State, which had become an example of where democracy works with exemplary infrastructural projects under former Gov. Wike, should not be upturned into a festering sore of violent clashes due to ego and greed.”

The INDG emphasizes the need for caution and peaceful conflict resolution, calling on stakeholders in Rivers State to support Governor Fubara against any anti-democratic forces and seek a peaceful settlement.

The group also calls on the Speaker and the leadership of the Rivers State House of Assembly to reconsider their decision to suspend the Majority Leader, Hon. Edison Ehie, and the notice of impeachment for Fubara, warning that the Ijaw nation is closely monitoring developments in Rivers and is ready to protect the mandate given to the Governor, who is an Ijaw man.
