During the inauguration, Zacch Adedeji, the Chairman of the Presidential CNG Initiative Steering Committee, emphasized the importance of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) as a means to reduce transportation costs. He revealed that the Nigerian government currently spends a staggering $6 billion annually to import petroleum, which has adverse consequences for the country’s economy.

Mr. Adedeji emphasized the paradox of Nigeria buying petrol for vehicles when the country possesses abundant natural gas resources that could power vehicles more affordably. He pointed out that the switch to CNG could significantly reduce foreign exchange expenditure and create numerous job opportunities.

He also shared the projection that within the next three to five years, Nigeria could save $3 billion to $5 billion that is currently being spent on petrol. This shift to CNG, Mr. Adedeji added, would reduce the country’s dependence on foreign oil imports.

The Chairman emphasized that the P-CNGi initiative is opening up this economic sector to all Nigerians, encouraging the establishment of conversion centers and the import of CNG kits. This collaborative approach aims to make CNG a mainstream choice for transportation.

Michael Oluwagbemi, the Project Director of P-CNGi, highlighted the significance of the Abuja P-CNGi Conversion Center, which is the second of its kind following the Lagos State P-CNGi Conversion Center. He described this initiative as a profound shift in Nigeria’s approach to energy and transportation, emphasizing the country’s commitment to mitigating climate change and achieving sustainable economic growth. The Presidential CNG Initiative aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Tinubu, focusing on responsible resource management and environmental well-being.
