Ex-COAS Buratai warns against political interference in military affairs

Former Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai (retired), has emphasized that political interference in military matters can have detrimental effects on national security. He made this assertion while delivering a lecture titled “Public Service and the Imperatives for National Security in Nigeria” during the Second Stanza 2023 National Public Service and 65th University of Ibadan Alumni Association Anniversary Lecture in Ibadan, Oyo State.

Lt. Gen. Buratai expressed concern that political interference often obstructs the smooth functioning of military operations and hampers the effective execution of military plans. He added that such interference could compromise the professionalism and morale of service personnel, who are also considered public servants.

He explained, “This interference often stems from a lack of understanding of the complexities in military operations, strategy, and the unique challenges faced by military leaders. When politicians impose their own agenda or micromanage military affairs, it can undermine the effectiveness and autonomy of military leaders. Furthermore, political interference can erode the morale and trust within military ranks. When military leaders are constantly subjected to political pressures and demands that do not align with military expertise, it can create a sense of disillusionment among the troops. This can negatively impact their motivation, discipline, and overall effectiveness in carrying out their duties.”

Lt. Gen. Buratai stressed that the insecurity issues faced by Nigeria since 2009 could be overcome with strong political will. He underscored the importance of civil authorities having oversight and democratic control over the military in a democracy but urged politicians to respect the expertise and professionalism of military leaders. He recommended that politicians rely on the advice and expertise of military leaders regarding defense and security matters instead of politicizing national security.

The former Inspector-General of Police and chairman of the occasion, Mike Okiro, called for greater synergy among security agencies in the country and encouraged citizens to collaborate with the police in addressing security challenges.

In his opening remarks, the President of UIAA Worldwide, Prof. Saawua Nyityo, highlighted the association’s commitment to connecting with alumni and fostering collaboration with individuals and institutions to address societal challenges and contribute to the nation’s progress.
