The operation also led to the discovery and dismantling of 106 dug-out pits, 111 boats, 229 storage tanks, 290 cooking ovens, eight pumping machines, 10 outboard engines, two speedboats, and one vessel. The military’s efforts in the region have been relentless.

According to Maj.-Gen. Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, the troops also managed to recover a substantial amount of stolen petroleum products. They seized 506,500 liters of stolen crude oil, 477,790 liters of illegally-refined diesel, and 51,000 liters of kerosene. These achievements are crucial in the fight against illegal activities that harm the environment and the nation’s economy.

The operations spanned across several states, including Cross River, Delta, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, and Bayelsa, where illegal refining sites and criminal activities were targeted. In the Southeast, troops of “Operation UDO KA” successfully raided criminals’ hideouts in Nnewi South and Ohaukwu Local Government Areas of Anambra and Ebonyi.

The military’s actions in the region have not been without challenges. On October 25, troops engaged in a gunfight with members of the proscribed IPOB/ESN in Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra, resulting in the neutralization of two gunmen. The military also recovered several weapons and explosive devices during these operations, further demonstrating their commitment to curbing insecurity in the region.

During these operations, troops neutralized six terrorists, made 13 arrests, and successfully rescued three kidnapped hostages. The recovered items included various firearms, magazines, rounds of ammunition, and other equipment. All arrested suspects, rescued hostages, and seized items were handed over to the relevant authorities for further legal action.

Operation Delta Safe’s proactive efforts aim to combat illegal refining, oil theft, and other criminal activities that have been detrimental to the Niger Delta region, its people, and the nation as a whole. These actions represent significant progress in restoring security, stability, and prosperity to this critical area.
