Igbo lawyers urge South-East governors to address the weekly sit-at-home order

A group of Igbo lawyers based in Lagos, ‘Otu Oka-Iwu Nigeria,’ has called upon the governors of the South-East region to collaborate and find a solution to the recurring sit-at-home protests on Mondays.

Mazi Okechukwu Unegbu, the President of the group, made this plea during the organization’s inaugural press conference held in Lagos on Tuesday.

Unegbu highlighted the negative impact of the sit-at-home protests on the economy of Igboland and urged the governors to work collectively to develop strategies to address this issue.

He emphasized that the continuous sit-at-home orders on Mondays have become a norm in Igboland, creating a sense of insecurity for those who venture out on those days.

Unegbu expressed the group’s disappointment in the government, which had promised to protect its citizens. The lawyers called on the government to intervene and provide assistance to the people in Igboland.

The lawyers also raised concerns about the security challenges in Nigeria, particularly in Igboland, which have significantly affected the region’s economic growth and development.

Igboland, once known for its vibrant economic activities along the Onitsha-Nnewi and Aba-Orlu axes, has witnessed a decline in business activities, leading to an economy with no clear direction or substance.

Unegbu stressed the need for collective action to restore the region’s economic vitality and educational excellence.

He called for a return to the days when Igboland was celebrated for its outstanding educational achievements and emphasized the importance of addressing the current disinterest in education among Igbo children.

Unegbu lamented that today, young people in Igboland seem less inclined to pursue education and, instead, are drawn to fraudulent activities in their pursuit of wealth.

The lawyers urged the South-East governments to take action to reverse this concerning trend before it deteriorates further.

They emphasized their commitment to the unity of Nigeria and expressed their concerns about the current state of affairs in the region. The lawyers called for a united effort to address the challenges facing Igboland and to restore the region’s prosperity and educational standards.
