Intensified calls for Governor Akeredolu’s resignation amidst governance concerns

The clamor for the resignation of Ondo State Governor Rotimi Akeredolu has gained momentum in recent weeks as concerns mount over his remote governance from Ibadan in Oyo State. Akeredolu, who returned from a medical trip to Germany, has been notably absent from the state capital, Akure, choosing to govern from his personal residence in Ibadan.

The governor, who left Nigeria on June 13, 2023, for medical treatment, spent three months abroad and returned on September 9. Despite notifying the Ondo State House of Assembly of a 21-day leave and transmitting power to his deputy during his absence, Akeredolu has yet to set foot in Akure upon his return.

Critics argue that the prolonged absence and off-site governance have left Ondo State on autopilot, fueling the call for Akeredolu’s resignation. The First Lady, Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, has also faced accusations of orchestrating the governor’s continued stay in power despite reported health concerns.

In the midst of the political turmoil, Deputy Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa is fighting off impeachment attempts by Akeredolu’s loyalists. The move to oust Aiyedatiwa began upon Akeredolu’s return, leading to the sacking of media aides in the deputy governor’s office. Despite intervention attempts by the National Working Committee of the APC, Aiyedatiwa finds himself sidelined in the ongoing political battle.

Kennedy Peretei, the National Publicity Secretary of the Ondo State PDP, has called for Akeredolu’s impeachment, citing a violation of the constitution due to an extended period of governance absence. However, legal experts explain that the process to declare Akeredolu incapacitated must begin with the commissioners, who have the power to make such a declaration.

According to Section 189 of the Nigerian Constitution, 2/3 of the state executive council must pass a resolution declaring the governor incapacitated. Subsequently, a medical panel, including the governor’s physician, is appointed to assess the governor’s health. Despite legal provisions, the close ties between the governor and the commissioners pose challenges to initiating such a process.

With 33 out of 35 State Executive Council members expressing confidence in the ailing governor, it remains uncertain whether political stakeholders in Ondo State will pursue the impeachment route or wait for the next election in November 2024. The upcoming primary election in April 2024 may provide a clearer picture of the state’s political landscape.
