UN Women emphasizes crucial role of investing in Women’s Rights Organizations for gender equality

In a recent speech at a regional consultation during the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, the Country Representative of UN Women, Beatrice Eyong, highlighted the imperative role of investing in and empowering women’s rights organizations in achieving gender equality.

Eyong expressed concern that significant changes have not occurred since the initiation of the 16 Days of Activism 20 years ago. Addressing gender equality, she emphasized the need for proactive and innovative solutions, stating, “A key to these solutions lies in investing in and empowering women’s rights organisations. You possess the knowledge, tools, and determination to reshape societies to be safer, more inclusive, and just.”

Reflecting on the progress made over the past two decades, Eyong acknowledged historic results in the campaign to end violence against women and girls. However, she emphasized that the composition of peace tables and the impunity enjoyed by perpetrators of atrocities against women and girls remain largely unchanged.

Eyong expressed concern about coordinated efforts to push back on gender equality, particularly in West and Central Africa. She warned against the deliberate undermining of access to the human rights system for women and girls, stating that neglecting commitments to end violence against women could have lasting and inter-generational effects for women and drastic consequences for world peace, especially in the West Africa region.

Highlighting the significance of a strong feminist movement, Eyong cited research showing its critical role in driving change, influencing policy, and transforming social norms and power relations. She shared that the European Union and UN Women have collaborated on the A.C.T. initiative, focusing on strengthening global and regional advocacy, coalition building, and transformative feminist action to combat violence against women.

Mrs. Eseme Stuart, the European Union focal person, explained that the ACT program is a joint commitment between the European Commission and UN Women, building on the experience of the EU-UN Spotlight Initiative. The ACT program is a multi-stakeholder partnership mobilizing governments, civil society, international organizations, and the private sector in the fight against gender-based violence.
