Enugu Correctional Service facilitates NECO enrollment for 1,137 individuals

In a remarkable initiative spanning the past 12 years, the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS), Enugu State Command, has successfully registered 1,137 inmates for the National Examination Council (NECO) external exams. This significant effort, aimed at fostering educational opportunities within the correctional system, was disclosed by Mr. Nicholas Obiako, the Comptroller of Corrections in Enugu State, during a press briefing on Wednesday in Enugu.

Highlighting the commitment to educational pursuits and inmate development, Obiako shared that 124 convicts are presently participating in the ongoing NECO external test at the Special Study Centre located within the Enugu Custodial Centre. Notably, this number stands out as one of the highest among states in the country.

The correctional centers in the state, including Enugu, Nsukka, and Oji River, have been actively fostering educational programs, ensuring that inmates receive quality instruction. Obiako emphasized the success of the inmates, attributing it to substantial investments in educational initiatives, covering primary and secondary school classes, as well as comprehensive adult education programs within the correctional facilities.

He stated, “For over many years now, our inmates come out with excellent results as we invest heavily in grooming them right from the primary and secondary school classes and quality adult education classes in the centers.”

Moreover, the Comptroller highlighted the positive outcomes of this educational endeavor, noting that individuals achieving success in their chosen fields of study often pursue further education. Many opt for direct admission to the university through the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), which conveniently has a study center within the Enugu Custodial Centre. This holistic approach aims to equip inmates with the necessary skills and knowledge for successful reintegration into society.
