BSEMA appeals to UN and partners to alleviate humanitarian crisis in Benue State

In a desperate call for help, the Benue State Emergency Management Agency (BSEMA) is reaching out to the United Nations (UN) and other humanitarian partners to intervene in the humanitarian crisis gripping over 14 internally displaced persons (IDPs) camps in the state.

Sir James Iorpuu, the Executive Secretary of BSEMA, voiced this appeal during the monthly distribution of essential supplies to IDPs on a recent Monday. Expressing deep concern over the deplorable conditions, particularly the lack of shelter in new camps like Agagbe, Ichwa, and Anyiin, Iorpuu highlighted the urgency of the situation.

He revealed that numerous camps, including the one in Ukum Local Government Area (LGA), are overwhelmed with displaced individuals escaping fresh attacks from herders. The influx of IDPs has even led to the takeover of primary school premises, disrupting the academic pursuits of students and causing significant educational setbacks.

Iorpuu emphasized that the provision of shelters would alleviate the hardships faced by IDPs seeking temporary refuge in schools and facilitate the return of affected children to normal academic activities.

While acknowledging the support from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and various international and local partners, Iorpuu commended Governor Hyacinth Alia for providing logistical support. As a gesture of magnanimity, Governor Alia directed the distribution of food and non-food relief items to both existing and new IDP camps in Ukum, reflecting a commitment to addressing the ongoing crisis.
