Tems reflects on the challenges and blessings of Nigerian identity

Talented singer Temilade Openiyi, widely known as Tems, shared her perspective on the complexities of being Nigerian, emphasizing both the hardships and blessings that come with it.

In a recent interview with Kiss FM in London, the Grammy-winning artist acknowledged the toughness of being Nigerian but highlighted the potential for blessings when one leverages their talents in a way that resonates globally.

Describing the experience of being a Nigerian woman as nothing short of a miracle, Tems expressed her admiration for the resilience of her fellow Nigerian women. She stated, “Being a Nigerian woman is a miracle. Because being a Nigerian, for anybody, is tough. But I think if you can tap into your gifts and own who you are and be unapologetic about it, and take that to the world, that is an honour.”

Tems believes that embracing one’s identity and showcasing individual talents on a global stage can bring both personal fulfillment and contribute to changing perceptions about Nigeria. Despite the challenges, she sees Nigerian women as particularly blessed and values the uniqueness they bring to the world.
