According to the global health organization, 60% of Nigeria’s population contributes to the country’s total health expenditure, with a significant portion being from the low-income segment, leading to financial strain on individuals seeking healthcare services.

Dr. Francis Ukwuije, the Technical Officer for Health Financing and Public-Private Partnerships Universal Health Coverage at WHO, raised these concerns during a seminar organized by the Association of Nigerian Health Journalists. The event served as a platform to discuss and explore solutions to challenges within the healthcare sector.

Ukwuije emphasized the need for adequate and sustainable revenue sources, highlighting that efficient and equitable access to Universal Health Coverage relies on it. He pointed out that individuals often invest a considerable portion of their daily income to cover unpredictable health expenses, contributing to increased impoverishment.

In line with Goal 3 and Target 3.8 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the WHO aims to ensure universal access to essential health services without the risk of financial hardship. Dr. Ukwuije stressed that the health financing framework plays a crucial role in achieving this goal, emphasizing the importance of understanding both the amount spent on health and the structure of financing.
