Remo Stars maintain NPFL summit despite Heartland defeat

Remo Stars concluded 2023 at the pinnacle of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) table, retaining their lead despite a 3-1 loss to Heartland in Owerri on Thursday.

Heartland secured the lead with Promise Anyanwu’s goal in the 50th minute, and Sikiru Alimi equalized 19 minutes later. However, the hosts sealed the victory with two late goals from Onyekachi Okafor and Chinedu Ike.

With 29 points from 16 games, Remo Stars continue to dominate the standings. Lobi Stars climbed to the second spot after a 1-0 triumph against Niger Tornadoes, with Kumaga Suur scoring the decisive goal 15 minutes from time.

Defending champions Enyimba secured the only away victory of the day by defeating Bayelsa United 2-1 in Yenagoa. Ekenne Awazie provided the lead for Enyimba in the 65th minute, but Bayelsa United retaliated, with Israel Consul equalizing seven minutes later. Chijioke Mbaoma secured the winning goal for Enyimba from the penalty spot nine minutes from time.
