Football Legend Mario Zagallo passes away at 92

The football world mourns the loss of Brazil’s iconic figure, Mario Zagallo, who passed away at the age of 92. Zagallo, a former World Cup winner, made history by playing in the World Cup final an unprecedented five times, securing victory four times as both a player and later as a coach with Brazil. Notably, he holds the distinction of being the first individual to achieve the status of a world champion both on the field and from the managerial sidelines.

The sad news of Zagallo’s demise was confirmed by Ednaldo Rodrigues, the president of the Brazilian soccer confederation. In a statement released on Saturday, Rodrigues paid tribute to Zagallo, describing him as “one of the biggest legends” in the sport. He expressed condolences to Zagallo’s family and fans, acknowledging the profound loss felt by soccer enthusiasts worldwide.

Zagallo concluded his professional playing career in 1965 and seamlessly transitioned into coaching, starting with Rio de Janeiro club Botafogo the following year.
