Former Delta Governor Ifeanyi Okowa has expressed confidence in his innocence regarding the alleged misappropriation of N1.3 trillion in oil derivation funds, describing the accusation as “puerile and preposterous”.
Okowa made this statement while receiving a solidarity visit from the national leadership of the Urhobo Progress Union (UPU) at his residence in Asaba.
He emphasized that the petitioners were driven by mundane political considerations, and that he is not worried about the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) invitation.
Okowa pointed out the impracticality of misappropriating such a large sum, stating that it would require taking between N16 billion and N20 billion every month, which is even beyond the capabilities of the President of Nigeria, let alone the governor of Delta State.
He highlighted the financial challenges faced by the state during his tenure, including insufficient funds to pay salaries, with some local governments owing up to 15 months’ worth of salaries.
Despite these challenges, Okowa noted that Delta State became the highest salary-paying state in the nation, with over 56,000 workers receiving their salaries promptly.
He also emphasized his support for the current governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, and his commitment to continuing to support the UPU and the state.
The former governor commended the UPU for their support throughout his tenure and beyond, acknowledging that he consistently received more votes from them than their own sons who contested against him.
The President-General of UPU, Chief Ese Owe, expressed the union’s appreciation for Okowa’s support in ensuring Oborevwori’s emergence as governor.
Okowa’s confidence in his innocence is rooted in his belief that he has done everything correctly, and he welcomes the EFCC investigation, trusting that the truth will be revealed.
He prayed for those who sent the petition, stating that they will face the consequences of their actions.
With his reputation intact, Okowa remains committed to supporting the current administration and the people of Delta State.
