The Senate leadership clarified the recent six-month suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (PDP, Kogi Central). They explained that the suspension was due to her alleged misconduct and violations of Senate rules. This is contrary to public opinion that it was because of her sexual harassment allegations against Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele addressed the issue on Saturday, refuting claims that Natasha’s suspension was linked to her accusations against Akpabio.

He emphasized that the disciplinary action resulted from her “persistent acts of misconduct, blatant disregard for the provisions of the Senate Standing Orders 2023 (As Amended), and gross indiscipline.”

The conflict began in February when Natasha resisted relocating to a newly assigned seat during a plenary session on February 25, 2025.

Despite multiple appeals from the Minority Leader and other senior senators, she refused to comply, leading to disorder in the chamber.

Additionally, she spoke without being recognized by the presiding officer and made remarks deemed abusive and disrespectful toward the Senate leadership.

Subsequently, Natasha accused Akpabio of sexual harassment during a television interview. However, Bamidele stressed that her suspension was unrelated to these allegations, focusing solely on her conduct within the Senate.

Senator Natasha and Akpabio

The Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions investigated the matter and found Natasha guilty of violating Sections 6.1 and 6.2 of the Senate Rules. The committee recommended her immediate suspension, which the Senate approved on March 6, 2025. The suspension includes the withdrawal of her salary, closure of her Senate office, and revocation of her security details.

In response, Natasha rejected the suspension, labeling it “illegal” and asserting that it violates principles of natural justice, fairness, and equity. She maintains that she remains a legitimate senator and intends to continue serving her constituents.

Legal experts criticized the Senate’s decision, describing the suspension as unconstitutional and a violation of Akpoti-Uduaghan’s fundamental rights. They argue that the action disregarded a valid court order and set a concerning precedent for legislative overreach.

The situation continues to evolve, with debates over legislative conduct, members’ rights, and the balance of power within Nigeria’s senate house.
