The need for presidential appointment reform, insights from former INEC chairman Jega

During a two-day retreat organized for senators by the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State, Prof Attahiru Jega, the former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), reiterated his stance that INEC chairmen should not be appointed by the President.

Jega also highlighted the necessity for amendments to the Electoral Act of 2022, particularly focusing on the removal of ambiguities and the clarification and strengthening of certain sections.

In his address regarding INEC’s leadership, Jega argued for the President to be stripped of the power to appoint the Chairman and National Commissioners of INEC. He emphasized that such reforms are crucial to ensure that INEC remains impartial and free from partisan influences.

Additionally, Jega called for a thorough review of the law to expedite the resolution of election-related cases and the issuance of judgments before the date of swearing-in. These proposals aim to enhance the integrity and transparency of Nigeria’s electoral processes.
