Kaduna Electric has expressed its growing concern about the persistent vandalism of electrical installations within its operational region. Despite these challenges, the company is actively taking measures to combat this issue and ensure a consistent power supply for its customers.

The Chief Technical Officer, Engr Lawal Aliyu Mashi, disclosed that there were approximately 172 reported cases of vandalism in the four franchise states of the company between July and September this year, leading to a loss of equipment valued at N138,056,343 during that period.

Specific incidents mentioned include the vandalism of earthing cable at Abakpa Injection Substation in Kaduna and the theft of neutral incomer cables in Badarawa, Kaduna. Additionally, due to payment default, a community was disconnected from the power supply, resulting in further vandalism of several electrical components.

In Gusau, Zamfara State, vandalism included damage to aluminium conductors and the theft of 300mm2 single-core cable from the 300KVA FECT 2 substation.

Kaduna Electric’s Chief Security Officer, Col Ubale Abubakar (retired), stated that the company has intensified collaboration with security agencies, including the military, police, and civil defense corps, to arrest and prosecute suspects involved in these criminal acts.

He also emphasized the importance of reporting any suspicious activities related to electrical infrastructure to Kaduna Electric offices or security agencies, and the need to raise awareness about the negative consequences of vandalism in collaboration with local authorities, including Divisional Police Officers and military leaders.
