NLC’s Pledge to Uphold Workers’ Rights and Dignity in 2024

In the upcoming year, 2024, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) is poised to initiate transformative measures, as expressed by NLC President Joe Ajaero. A key focus for the NLC in 2024 is ensuring a living wage for all Nigerian workers, striving to establish a National Minimum Wage aligned with humane income parameters and accessibility to basic necessities.

Ajaero emphasized the commitment to constructing workplaces that safeguard workers’ rights, minimize decent work gaps, and contribute to national wealth creation. The NLC plans to collaborate closely with entities such as the Federal Ministry of Labour, Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA), and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) through the tripartite process, aiming to regulate Industrial Relations and advocate for updated labour administration laws.

Anticipating a pivotal year, the NLC envisions a restoration of what has been withheld from workers. Ajaero asserted that private sector employers and government agencies must settle any outstanding payments to Nigerian workers in 2024. Collaboration with civil society partners will be intensified to build frameworks enhancing civic space, amplifying voices, and holding the government accountable for effective governance.

Expressing concern for the Yuletide season, Ajaero criticized the insensitivity of the Federal Government, urging compassion in addressing the hardship faced by citizens due to delayed December 2023 salaries. The NLC remains resolute in championing workers’ rights, urging Nigerians to unite for a better future and advocating for inclusivity, understanding, and collaboration.

In acknowledgment of Nigerian workers’ support during the nationwide strike, the NLC extends appreciation, emphasizing the collective readiness to protect the nation against potential challenges in 2024. The call to maintain the spirit of solidarity becomes paramount in facing anticipated challenges and resisting the imposition of stifling neo-liberal economic policies by the government.
