Conflict entrepreneurs fueling banditry, says Minister of State for Defence, Matawalle

Dr. Bello Matawalle, the Minister of State for Defence, has attributed the persistent issue of banditry in the North-West to conflict entrepreneurs. In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday, Matawalle emphasized that these individuals benefit from the banditry economy, creating obstacles to eradicating insecurity in the country.

Matawalle referred to banditry as a business, stating that various people in the North are involved in this enterprise. He highlighted the diverse elements, including drug dealers, food and fuel vendors, and informants, who receive substantial payments for their involvement in criminal activities.

During his tenure as the governor of Zamfara, Matawalle observed the economic dynamics of banditry. He cited examples where basic commodities, such as a bottle of coke or a bag of rice, were sold at exorbitant prices within the bandits’ enclaves.

The minister stressed the need for a collective effort in addressing security challenges, urging Nigerians to unite despite their differences. Matawalle shared some actions he took as a governor to curb banditry, emphasizing the importance of disrupting communication networks to prevent criminals from being tipped off about security operations.

While acknowledging the delicate nature of security issues, Matawalle expressed concern that civilian casualties receive more attention than the loss of military lives. He emphasized the government’s commitment to eliminating criminals from the country and debunked claims of negotiating with them.

Matawalle concluded by affirming that bandits are not faceless, asserting that people are aware of their identities.
